SUMMARY:Heartland Apicultural Society
DESCRIPTION:Heartland Apicultural Society (HAS) offers three full days of beekeeping education every year\, rotating through midwest and southeastern states to reach as many beekeepers as possible.\n\n\n\nThis year\, the HAS conference will be held July 11-13\, 2018 at Washington University in St. Louis on the Danforth campus about a mile from Interstate 64. \nFounded in 1853\, Washington University is a private institution that is ranked in the Top 20 universities nationwide by Newsweek. Our team visited campus this spring and took lots pictures of the site. \n\n\nSt. Louis is a wonderful destination for beekeepers and non-beekeepers alike – New York Times: St. Louis Is as Welcoming as It Is Budget-Friendly \n\nView the tentative schedule online. \nOpening day at 8:30 a.m. plenary sessions will be held at the Edison Theater (#32 on the Danforth campus map). \nClasses\, vendors and most HAS activities will be held in Anheuser-Busch Hall (#4 on the map). \nThe bee yard will be in McMillan Hall courtyard (#79 on the map). \nMeals will be served in Danforth University Center\, called The Duc (pronounced “duck” as in Donald) (#27 on the map). \nDorm rooms are located in South 40 House building (#113 on the map). \nYou might also find the interactive Danforth Campus map with building names and out of town directions handy. \nParking is free at Danforth University Center garage (# 27 on the map) for those registered to stay at the dorms for the conference. On campus parking is available for $9 a day at Millbrook (#95 on the map) and Snow Way (#97 on the map.) For more information about parking at Washington University\, visit their campus guide including parking information. \nIt’s almost time for the HAS 2018 Conference July 11-13\, 2018 in St. Louis! \nJune 10: Sheraton Clayton Plaza HAS conference rates end. \nJune 15: Early bird conference registration ends.  Cost is $100 for three days or $40 per day per person. On site dorm accommodations\, meals and evening events are extra. \nAfter June 15\, conference registration is $150 for three days and $55 per day per person. \nJune 20: Clayton Plaza HAS conference room rates end. \nJune 30: Online conference registration ends.  \nJuly 11-13: Walk-ins are welcome for the $55 per day registration. Preliminary online schedule. \nFor more campus information\, feel free to download this campus guide. \nAmong the keynote speakers confirmed for this year’s conference: \n\n\n\nMarla Spivak\, MacArthur Fellow and Professor at the University of Minnesota\, will open the conference with her perspective on how events are shaping the future of beekeeping.\nDennis vanEngelsdorp\, Director of the Bee Informed Partnership at the University of Maryland\, will provide perspectives on hive management based on his years of collecting and analyzing hive management survey data.\nMay Berenbaum\, Professor and Head of the Entomology Department at the University of Illinois\, will address effects of agricultural technology on honey bees.\nThe University of Minnesota Bee Squad\, a team of professional beekeeping instructors\, will present beekeeping techniques in classrooms and in the bee yard during each breakout session of the conference.\nKeith Delaplane\, Professor and Director of the University of Georgia Honey Bee Program\, will address the practical challenges of integrating hive management with evolution and ecology\, and present classic talks on honey bee biology.\nDr. Dewey Caron will present his comprehensives perspectives on the art and science of beekeeping.\nDr. Samuel Ramsey from the University of Maryland will present ground-breaking and inspiring research regarding varroa destructor.\nJennifer Berry\, University of Georgia research Manager\, will report on her recent studies of oxalic acid applications.\nLeading agricultural and entomological scientists will participate in moderated panel discussions of some of the most important and controversial topics affecting bees and beekeepers.\n\n\n\n\nYou will also enjoy social activities and fun excursions of interest to beekeepers and non-beekeepers alike. This year\, evening activities include a movie “Ulee’s Gold” on Wednesday\, July 11 complete with popcorn: a visit to Anheuser-Busch Brewery and the Clydesdales Thursday\, July 12 and a tour of the Insectarium among other activities at the world-renowned St. Louis Zoo Friday\, July 13.Outstanding vendors will be on hand with a selection of beekeeping products.
